If you’re thinking of going blond this summer, it’s the perfect time to lighten those locks, but there are some things you need to know before making the plunge. To keep your hair healthy, and to maintain your colour, we’ve got some tips to help.

1. Transition is best for those with darker hair

If your hair is currently dark, then your stylist will likely suggest a transition to a full blond look. By spanning the lightening process over a few appointments, your hair will undergo less damage.

2. Leave it to the pros

While a cheap DIY home treatment may be tempting, it might cost you more in the long run if it needs to be corrected. We recommend leaving the hair dying to the pro’s to avoid unwanted colouring disasters, like shades of green turning up. Our stylists will colour your hair to suit your specific needs, their expertise will ensure you have that perfect shade of blond with the least amount of damage.

3. It requires maintenance

If you’re already a natural blond, your roots will be less of an issue depending on how light you go. However, if you want a low-maintenance option without the need for root touch-ups, then balayage is always a great option. Our stylists will hand paint your hair, going from slightly darker at the top down to lighter ends for a more natural look. As it grows out, it’ll continue to look great and it’s a great way to test a lighter hair colour!

4. You need to update your hair care routine

If you’re lightening your hair, it’s being bleached and will be prone to dryness. By using a deep conditioning mask once a week, you’ll ensure your hair stays hydrated and silky smooth. We have an in-house deep conditioning treatment available, and Olaplex deep conditioning hair mask available for purchase in store. Also, check our last blog post with some natural homemade hair masks to do the trick!

5. Your complexion matters.

Different skin tones will be flattered by different shades of blond, that’s why a professional consultation can help you achieve the perfect look. Warmer skin tones look best with golden hues, while cool skin tones can rock the platinum look. While there are always exceptions to the rule, our stylists can help you decide what will suit you best.

6. Have reference photos

Unfortunately, our stylists aren’t mind-readers. If you’re after a specific look, bring in some photo-inspiration to help communicate the exact shade you want so there’s no confusion over what rose-gold blondy ash looks like… now you have an excuse to cruise Instagram in search of that perfect inspiration photo 😉

7. You might need some new makeup

While the general rule is that your brows should match your hair, of course that’s not always the case but you might need to lighten them a bit. Usually, women find that as they dye their hair lighter, they require less makeup.

8. The texture of your hair might change

If this is your first time bleaching your hair, this may come as a surprise to you. If you have naturally curly hair, you might find that it gets a little straighter after bleaching it. And on the flip side, if your hair is naturally quite flat and straight, it might end up with more volume and texture.

9. What’s your budget?

People usually assume that being blond is expensive, while that can be true, it doesn’t have to be! Talk to our stylists about your budget, and they will have some options that suit you. By slowly transitioning from dark to light, and having some highlights added before going all out, you won’t have to break the bank.

10. Try not to wash your hair as often

Last but not least, if you’re in the habit of washing your hair on a daily basis you might want to cut back and go a few days between washes. Bleaching your hair will cause it to be drier. By allowing a few days in between washes, your natural oils will do their thing and hydrate your hair. Everyone’s hair is different so find out what works for you as you transition your routine to care for your newly lightened tresses.

As always, our stylists are here to help! If you have any questions or concerns, book in for a consultation and find out the best option for your hair. Hope to see you soon!
